Exactly, context matters. Who needs the whole internet as context and be average in the process? :)

Maybe new jobs will emerge: Context Engineer - natural person tasked with the responsibility of providing the right context/training data for the company's local LLM in an ethical way, taking into account the:
* the company's values and standards
* the company's unique selling points
* laws and regulations for all the regions the company is active in

Just pondering...

Indeed, different T&Cs are an advantage, but still. Where does the data go? And regular users go for ease of use. If security awareness is any indication, it doesn't bode well.

The only acceptable use IMHO are local (to the data owner) instances that use ethically trained models.

I think you did well. It's hard to deal with this in the workplace. My $workplace hands out licences like candy and a lot of people are drinking the Kool Aid.

Going to have a look, I recently started using OpenBSD (7.9) on a tiny desktop as a main general purpose desktop. Learning about unveil etc. since I couldn't upload images from within Firefox XD

I noticed you're combining Apple hardware and OpenBSD. Any chance you're using OpenBSD on an MBA M1?

I'm no stranger to self hosting Fediverse/ActivityPub applications.

Crikey, I ran Laconica back in 2009 when @evan@cosocial.ca still had a moustache.

I have also hosted GotoSocial and Pleroma. Never took the step to get Mastodon running (seemed too heavyweight, complex and intimidating).

However, I can't emphasis how different #LittleFedi is for a normal, non-technical user who has some spare hosting capacity available and just wants to install, configure a Fediverse presence and then forget about it.

Which seems precisely the design aim of LittleFedi and this quote from @stefano@bsd.cafe really resonated with me.

'What I kept wanting was something I could put on a small machine, in a corner, and then stop
thinking about. No runtime to keep current, no database server to babysit, no container stack, no
build pipeline that breaks the week I am travelling'.

@stefano@littleone.littlefedi.social TL;DR: THANK YOU!!

I would like to compliment and thank you and the team for everything that is littleFedi, especially the extensive documentation and presentation of littleFedi (website, branding, getting-it-out-there). You have opened the fediverse to many more enthousiasts because of the simplicity of littleFedi.

And simplicity is good! Less is more is really true when it comes to stuff like this. I have seen Mastodon instances (understandably, but sadly) shut down due to the high maintenance. My best friend is maintaining a private instance, which frees me from worrying about release notes etc. But littleFedi feels more like the old BBS days, tinkering with stuff and interacting with people!

I was really amazed by the extensive documentation upon release and you have done an amazing job! You should be proud of your achievements, including but not limited to bsd.cafe, illumos.cafe, fedimeteo. The Little Computer People should be proud about their project, it will have a lot of impact.

The world has not been changing for the better on a global scale for a while now; our planet is burning in more ways than I ever could have imagined. 'Small' projects like this are exactly the type of positivity that is needed. At least for me anyway, as I am finally enjoying tech a bit again. Yeah, I might be seeing someone about all of this regularly ;)

Thanks again! I'm off setting up a regular donation as I would like to encourage positive things :)

Oh my! I was laughing at this longer than I should have and that quote is SO fitting.

Yeah, sometimes technology needs to be punished by not paying attention to it. But we keep coming back, don't we? But a good book... is a good book!
